Mini writing exercises
Random ideas - just write
Let's get our writing and creative minds going!
Even if you have no idea what to write, here are a few phrases/words you can use in dialogue, to describe characters, as a story idea or the beginning of a plot. It all depends on you!
- girl with gray hair
- microwave monster
- typewriter user manual
- silly Zoki
Have fun and let your imagination run free. Try to write a story of at least 300 words.
Why 300 words?! So that you can see how much 300 words is... because 300 words every day means that you have a novel in a year;)
Character development
What would your main character/hero/heroine's CV look like?
What does he do? Or maybe it doesn't do? How are they at work? Where did they study, and for what? What skills do they have, and how many languages do they speak? Is she/he realizing the imagined and desired career path, or is she/he still looking for it?
Write your main character's resume. You may not use everything in your novel from their resume, but you will definitely get a clearer picture of their career path and give it depth.
Character development
We all dream.
What do your characters dream about?
What is their worst nightmare?
What is their most beautiful dream?
How do their dreams and nightmares affect and define them, shape their lives/life path?
Think of dreams and nightmares as something abstract, but also in terms of the state when we sleep.
Locations in a story
Locations in a story are more than just places where our characters live, walk or just pass by. The location can contribute to the atmosphere and development of the story.
Imagine your hero/heroine meeting his first love:
- at the bus station
- in a town in the middle of nowhere
- in a building material store
What's different just because of the location? How will the story go?
Choose two locations and try to write at least 200 words for each of them.
Random ideas - just write
Your protagonist is in a new town. Is he running away from something/someone, looking for new opportunities or is he just on vacation and wandering around the city?
Write a minimum of 300 words.
Character development
Who are your characters and what do they carry in their pockets or bags? (And how can we use it in the story?)
Is she a busy mom with a big bag with a bunch of, maybe unnecessary things, but she has that one key thing at a critical moment?
Is she a little girl with coins in her pocket and plays with them when she's nervous?
Is he a young man who always has cigarettes but doesn't actually smoke?
Or is he/she someone who carries a magnet all the time and everywhere? (Why a magnet?)
Or is she not wearing anything because her friend has a big bag and carries everything?
Think about it and use it in your stories.
Write a story
Your main character was a great sorceress.
She knew all kinds of magic, but now she can't perform any. She lost all her power, she lost all her magic.
Why? What happened?
And if she can regain only one magic/spell/power, what will she choose?
Try to write a story of at least 300 words.
